FAQ
Many
people have asked us to give an insight into how Our Company came
into being which I am delighted to do in the hope it will be interesting
as well as informative for anyone out there who is also either running
their own hire company now or in fact thinking of starting up.
Like
any other business start -up in this day and age, no matter what
money, time and effort you may have available to devote to making
your business the success you deserve it to be, there is no substitute
for experience!
Whether
this is experience you have gathered as you go along, or like a
lot
of people learnt the hard way through your own mistakes it is invaluable.
No two businesses are ever the same and no amount of reading up
on the
subject of rights and wrongs in starting a small business can make
up
for real life experience.
When
my wife and I started Bounce-A-Lot back in 1987 it wasn't
with much fore thought or planning, it was merely because we thought
it would be a 'good idea'
Why?
Because at the beginning of June we thought it would be a lovely
idea to hire a small bouncy castle in our garden for our son's 3rd
birthday party and set about trying to book one. We phoned every
company we found in our local paper, every company they recommended
us to, every company in yellow pages and every company in our local
free
papers and yes you've guessed it, they were ALL fully booked for
19 th June !
Well I had already told my son he was going to have a bouncy castle
party,
so I was determined that he was indeed going to have one, and in
the
end after literally days of phoning around I got one! Sure I had
to
pay an extra amount to finally get a company from 30 miles away
to
deliver one for 2 hours, but what a fantastic
successful party he had!
Not
a good way to start a business you may be thinking: no market research,
no time and effort planning and certainly no business plan!
Well
we certainly had none of the these, none of the things recommended
by any good business start up book or guide or bank for that matter,
but what we had 'our good idea' did in fact prove to be a Very good
idea indeed! Yes it was a hunch that if we were so desperate f
or a bouncy castle for our child's party then other parents would
be too.
And yes it was another hunch that if we had so much difficulty finding
a
bouncy castle in our area for 2 weeks ahead then there would be
room for
another hire company in our location.
So
without further ado we purchased our first 12' x 12' bouncy castle,
we
chose a 12' x 12' as it would just fit in our garden and seemed
a decent size.
From
then on we never looked back, buying more and more until we ran
about 12 units and branched into the manufacture side also.
We
feel we have the right experience as well as knowledge of what our
potential customers are looking for to bring into a manufacturing
company.
We
also feel we have a lot to offer our customers who actually buy
from us in
the way of good advice and help as we in fact continue to operate
our hire side
and although it is now very successful and virtually runs itself,
generating
customers year after year we class it as such a valuable source
of income we
certainly wouldn't be without it.
That's all very well for you, you might be thinking as you read
this, but
that was 12/13 years ago and things have changed now, haven't they?
The answer is that yes, things have changed, but that good idea
we had
12 years ago is still in fact a good idea today. Sure there may
be a few
more companies around but there are also more and more children
who
have birthday parties, when my son was 3 in 1987 only a small percentage
of the children in his nursery class had parties,
my youngest son who is just 8 has parties to go to almost every
week!
Children want parties and their parents see a days bouncy castle
hire as
a cheap (yes, cheap alternative, compared to McDonalds or a play
area,
or bowling) and wonderful way to not only have a successful party
with minimum input from the adults, but a brilliant way of entertaining
the
kids while they prepare the party and clean up afterwards!
The
fact is, even with 12 units to hire I turn down lots and lots of
bookings
every summer. I work together with a near by company and we pass
bookings
to each other and we both do not meet the demand in the summer.
I come into
contact with lots and lots of hire companies through our website
and I am
certain it is the same story all over.
More and more pubs, hotels, fetes, etc are becoming family orientated
and want to provide ways of keeping children amused and happy
in a safe way, and so there are more and more people looking for
inflatable attractions.
It is also apparently true, although you may not all agree that
we have more
leisure and free time now than at any other time in History, and
therefore
spend more time with our families so the demand for entertainment
is stronger than ever.
What
better business to be in? Keeping children happy!
